WORLD No 66 Soong Joo Ven won his first international title at the Malaysia International Series in Ipoh yesterday.

In an all-Malaysian men’s singles final, Joo Ven defeated World No 83 Cheam June Wei 21-13, 22-20 in 47 minutes.

It was his first win in five career finals after defeats in the 2015 Malaysia International, 2016 Scottish Open, 2017 Polish International and 2018 Hyderabad Open.

“I am obviously delighted and I hope this win opens up new opportunities for me to achieve greater things in my career,” said Joo Ven. I would like to thank my coaches and the other concerned parties for guiding me over the years.

“The next step is to work harder and also to earn enough ranking points to qualify for higher tier tournaments.”

Joo Ven will now focus on training before heading to Bangkok for the Thailand Open on July 30-July 4.
