Mulder and Scully are back!

It's official: Fox is bringing back The X-Files for a new 10-episode installment for the 2017-18 season, the network announced Thursday.

David Duchovny and Gillian Anderson will reprise their roles as FBI Agents Fox Mulder and Dana Scully, respectively. Creator Chris Carter will also return to write and executive produce. Filming will begin this summer.

"Iconic characters, rich storytelling, bold creators -- these are the hallmarks of great TV shows. And they are some of the reasons why The X-Files has had such a profound impact on millions of fans worldwide," said David Madden, President of Fox Broadcasting Company. "Chris' creativity, along with the brilliant work of David and Gillian, continue to propel this pop culture phenomenon, and we can't wait to see what fresh mysteries Mulder and Scully uncover in this next chapter of The X-Files."

There had been rumblings for months that the beloved sci-fi franchise would return to the small screen following its six-episode revival in early 2016.

In January, Madden was hopeful that all parties involved would come to a mutual agreement to continue The X-Files.

"A lot of conversations [are] going on; these conversations are complex, but we hope to be able to announce something about that shortly," he told reporters at winter Television Critics Association press tour, adding later, "The ideal is to get it ready for '18. Whether or not it would be January... We feel like there is progress being made."
