The first ever Woodstock Festival, promoted as "An Aquarian Experience: 3 Days of Peace and Music," was a music event that took place on Aug. 15-18, 1969, at a dairy farm in Bethel, New York, U.S. Close to half a million people attended the fest – often soaked in rain and mud – which featured performances from artists such as Jimi Hendrix, Crosby, Stills and Nash, Janis Joplin, Joan Baez, The Grateful Dead and Santana.

Here are some throwback pictures from the iconic festival that became enshrined in music history.
