No Empire Awards for the Wilderpeople

Despite scoring numerous nominations, New Zealand film The Hunt for the Wilderpeople won't be bringing any home from the Empire Awards in London.

The ceremony, which celebrates the most impressive films and cast members across genres, took place at London's Roundhouse on Sunday (Monday 0630 NZT).

The Hunt for the Wilderpeople lost to Rogue One: A Star Wars Story for best film and also bowed to The Greasy Strangler for best comedy.

Taika Waititi was was up for best director, but missed out to Gareth Edwards, who directed Rogue One: A Star Wars Story.

Actor Julian Dennison missed out on best male newcomer to Dave Johns for I, Daniel Blake.

The Kiwi film covers the comical relationship between foster child Ricky Baker ( Dennison) and his reluctant foster father Uncle Hec (Sam Neil) as they attempt to evade the law by retreating to the bush.
