Friends gave us Marcel the monkey, Smelly Cat and the most drawn-out "will they/won't they" romantic storyline.

Funny, silly, heartwarming, packed with jokes and one-liners which people can still recite word-perfectly today - it was ultimately a force for good.

What Friends was not, ever, was dark, depressing and profound to the point it hurt your head.

That was the beauty of the long-running TV show .

But it hasn't stopped others from speculating that the way the series ended should have been different. And not in a good way.

It's all to do with Phoebe.

As we watched the final episode through hot tears of grief, we witnessed the gang exit Monica and Chandler's apartment and go for one last coffee.

Except one Twitter user disagrees with this ending, and has revealed what he thinks - even getting a reaction from Marta Kauffman, the co-creator of the show.

"I'd have ended Friends by revealing it was all the meth-addled fantasy of a homeless Phoebe as she stared through the window of Central Perk," he writes on Twitter .

There's plenty more ammunition too.

"Every kooky aside, every episode she made everything about her, every instance of how much of an outsider she was...it all makes sense.

"All 10 seasons were merely her fevered imagination projecting herself into the lives of the other five. All she ever wanted was...Friends.

"The final scene would be Phoebe walking away from Central Perk, with the Ross, Rachel, Joey, Chandler and Monica characters making a reference to 'the crazy lady who always stares at us.'

"They all have different names and personalities.

"Phoebe walks past a furniture store and catches her reflection in a mirror placed in the window. The name of the store? 'Ursula.'

"Finally she returns to the park where she sleeps in front of the fountain. A broken lamp stands next to her bench. From behind, we see her put up six, dirty, but brightly coloured umbrellas."

If you find that whole alternative take on reality difficult to swallow, Marta Kauffman was even more taken aback.

Speaking to ET Online at the 2017 ATX Television Festival, Marta said: "That's the saddest thing I've ever heard!"

"No, I never heard that - that's a terrible theory. That's insane! That's, like, that's like crazy alt-television theory. Wow!"

"I'm fascinated," she added. "I just think that someone needs a life. Someone needs a life, that's all I'm saying."
