John Arkell returned from Ontario, Canada—where he had founded the village of Arkell—to grow barley and to brew beer. The brewery has been owned by family members since its establishment in 1843. The building is Grade II-listed (indicating its historical and cultural importance), and the whole site has been designated an Urban Conservation Area.
