Monteith’s

Corner of Turamaha & Herbert Streets, Greymouth, New Zealand

www.monteiths.co.nz

Now one of four breweries operated by the DB group (which itself is indirectly overseen by Heineken), Monteith’s can trace its roots back to 1868. Although many of Monteith’s beers are produced elsewhere, the Greymouth brewery—with its rare coal-fired boilers and open fermenters—is well worth a visit.

Monteith’s Pilsner Beer

beer style: Pilsner
alcohol content: 5% ABV

Mild for the style, this firm-bodied brew has a grassy hop note and lingering sweetish finish.

Monteith’s Black Beer

beer style: Black Lager
alcohol content: 5.2% ABV

Soft and sweetish, with coffee, chocolate, and nut flavours—and often a hint of banana too.
