The oldest surviving microbrewery west of Colorado, Bell’s (formerly Kalamazoo Brewing) has grown nearly 700-fold since its first sales in 1985. Founder Larry Bell has earned a reputation as something of a maverick. In 2006 he withdrew his beer from sale in Illinois, one of the brewery’s top markets, in a distribution dispute. However, in late 2007 he launched a range of Kalamazoo (not Bell’s) beers back into the Chicago area. Bell’s has built a new brewing facility outside Kalamazoo, but the original brewery remains, along with its appropriately named Eccentric Café. Bell’s beers are famous for their intensity, although the brewery flagship is wheat-based.


Expedition Stout

Begins with an intense blast of dark fruit (figs and plums) that turns into chocolate, roasted coffee, and port.


Two Hearted Ale

Amplified hops, with an initial rush of grapefruit and orange mingling with fresh floral notes. Perfectly balanced, with persistent bitterness.


Oberon Ale

A summer refresher. Zesty, with orange rind in the aroma, and delicate spiciness behind that. A crisp, sharp finish.


Best Brown Ale

Brimming with rich flavors such as caramel and chocolate, subtly balanced by rustic hops.
