Goose Island

1800 West Fulton Street, Chicago, IL, 60612

This brewery’s extensive range of beers reflects the MBA (Master of Beer Appreciation) Program that it established shortly after opening as a brewpub in 1988. When Goose Island built its production brewery in 1995, brewmaster Greg Hall would launch dozens of styles during the course of a year. Goose Island still operates the original pub on Clybourn as well as another near Wrigley Field, and both still offer an “MBA” (it’s actually a kind of loyalty card!).

Brewing secret

Bourbon County Stout (launched as the brewpub’s 1,000th batch, in 1995) arguably kicked off the US revolution of ageing beer in bourbon (and then other spirit) barrels.

India Pale Ale

beer style: India Pale Ale
alcohol content: 5.9% ABV

Pineapple and grapefruit, full of hop flavor, with a fruit and malt back-bone balancing the bitterness.

312 Urban Wheat

beer style: US Wheat Beer
alcohol content: 4.2% ABV

Typically unfiltered and hazy, with a citrussy, almost sweet, hop nose that announces it is American. Tart, fruity, with underlying creaminess.

beer style: Belgian Strong Ale
alcohol content: 7% ABV

Wild, lively hopsack aroma, earthy, with rich fruits and a firm, dry, characterful finish.

Bourbon County Stout

beer style: Imperial Stout
alcohol content: ABV Varies

Vintages vary, some flashing more bourbon than others. Always a marriage of rich chocolate, dark fruit, vanilla, and certainly bourbon.
