Gritty McDuff’s

396 Fore Street, Portland, ME, 04101

Opening in Portland Old Port in 1988, Gritty McDuff’s was one of the first brewpubs in the northeast and an early outpost for US cask ale. There are now branches in Freeport and Lewiston.

Brewing secret

The brewery uses traditional English methods, equipment, yeasts, hops, and range of barley malts.

Black Fly Stout

beer style: Stout
alcohol content: 4.1% ABV

Surprising coffee aromas and flavors, mingling with chocolate and toffee, but light and satisfyingly dry.

Halloween Ale

beer style: Extra Special Bitter
alcohol content: 6% ABV

An autumn release, brewed stronger, aged longer, and with more East Kent Goldings hops than are used in Gritty’s Best Bitter.
