When Mary Rubenstein gave her husband, Marc, a birthday card that read “welcome to the middle ages,” she unknowingly named the brewery the two homebrewers would launch in 1995. They’ve earned a reputation for their cask-conditioned, or “real,” ale.

Brewing secret

Their yeast is descended from an 150-year-old Yorkshire strain.

Grail Ale

beer style: Premium Bitter
alcohol content: 5.5% ABV

Alive on cask, with a ruby hue and a fresh blend of floral hops and toffee. Notes of plums and dates.

Black Heart Stout

beer style: Stout
alcohol content: 6.6% ABV

Fresh coffee and chocolate, with underlying smokiness. Rich yeast character, but a dry finish.
