Rogue Ales brewmaster John Maier joined the company a year after it opened in 1988. He has earned an international reputation for brewing envelope-pushing beers by creating a well-structured malt foundation on which to layer massive hop additions. This approach has won hundreds of awards and fostered the growth of the “Rogue Nation”—loyal fans who eagerly await the release of limited-edition Johns Locker Stock beers. Beyond its home bases of Newport and Portland, Rogue Ales operates brewpubs and restaurants along the west coast, calling them “micro-meeting halls”. There’s even one at Portland International Airport.

Brewing secret

Rogue beers are top-fermented using their own PacMan yeast which is well suited for bottle-conditioning.

Dead Guy Ale

beer style: Heller Bock
alcohol content: 6.6% ABV

Complex, clean malt aromas, rich and fruity, becoming toastier on the palate. Bright bitter hops. Dry and spicy.

Brutal Bitter

beer style: Extra Special Bitter
alcohol content: 6.2% ABV

Aromatic and flowery hops become juicier on the palate, braced against fermentation fruit and bready malt. Bitter to the end.

Shakespeare Stout

beer style: Stout
alcohol content: 6% ABV

Dark, roasty, chocolate, and coffee mingle with dark fruits and husky malt. Substantial, balanced hops and an oily/creamy smooth finish.

Hazelnut Brown Nectar

beer style: Brown Ale
alcohol content: 6.2% ABV

Inspired by a homebrewer’s recipe, with a solid dose of hazelnuts saturating a robust brown ale.
