Although aptly nicknamed as the “king of fruits” in Southeast Asia where it’s abundant, durian, which is a unique tropical fruit, always gets a bad rap. This is largely because of its smell, which is very strong and distinct and oftentimes causes people to turn away from giving this fruit a go.

But did you know that if you get past its hard exterior and strong odor, it actually has various health benefits to offer?

Here’s a look at what the “king of fruits” can provide to the human body:

It has numerous nutrients, especially compared to other fruits. One cup of its pulp can give around 357 grams of calories, 13 grams of fat, 9 grams of fiber and 4 grams of protein. But that’s not all. It also gives 80 percent of the daily value for vitamin C, 38 percent for vitamin B6, 30 percent for potassium, 29 percent for riboflavin, 61 percent for thiamine and 18 percent for magnesium, among others.

The fruit is also teeming with plant compounds, most of which act like antioxidants. These include carotenoids, polyphenols, flavonoids and anthocyanins. These make durian one of the most nutritious fruits you can ever enjoy.

As such, here are four reasons as to why you should give this pungent food a try:

  1. It lowers the risk of heart disease. Several of the compounds found in durian is actually known for reducing cholesterol levels, lessening the risk of clogging your arteries.
  2. Lowers your blood sugar. Unlike other tropical fruits, durian has a pretty low glycemic index (GI), meaning that its tendency to spike your blood sugar level is low.
  3. Lowers cancer risk. Based on a test-tube study, the antioxidants present in durian extract prevented a strain of breast cancer cells from spreading. Antioxidants are also good for your body in general, providing many benefits.
  4. Helps fight infection. Durian rind contains many compounds that have both anti-yeast and antibacterial properties, which can help ward off any infection.

Incredibly high in healthy vitamins, durian is deserving of its nickname. So the next time you see one, forget about the strong smell and just give it a go.
