© Getty Anyone can look good when they’ve spent hours with a crack glam squad, but the sort of glow Eva Longoria’s got takes something extra. We’re meeting the star in Cannes, where she’s walking the red

carpet for the film festival’s official beauty partner L’Oréal Paris, and she’s in town with her must-have beauty accessory – her new husband.

Mexican media mogul José Antonio Baston is third time lucky for Eva, who may be a petite 5ft 2in, but fills the room with her smile.

"We celebrated our one-year anniversary last night," beams Eva. "We had a beautiful dinner. No, we didn’t stay out late! I was like, 'Honey, we gotta call it early tonight.'"

Before today’s interview, everyone has told us what a sweetheart Eva is and she doesn’t disappoint.

"Oh, you guys are from the UK!" she exclaims excitedly. "I love the UK! Is Cheryl coming out this year? Oh shame, I love her! You have to tell her hello from me!"

Eva is quite the Anglophile, having recently filmed Decline And Fall for the BBC in Wales with Jack Whitehall, and counting Victoria Beckham as her best mate . And to show we’re talking real mates, not showbiz mates, VB was entrusted with designing Eva’s wedding dress .

Not your average actress, supersmart Eva is also a director, producer, author and political campaigner. As well as being an advocate for special needs, inspired by her elder sister who has learning difficulties, she is the founder of her own female empowerment foundation.

She’s just launched her own fashion line (‘My denim is awesome, it sucks in EVERYTHING in all the right places’) and is also a proud stepmum to José’s three kids, who are in their teens and 20s.

How does she fit it all in? By figuring out what’s important. "My priorities start with my husband and stepchildren and everything falls around them. When you want to do everything, you have to learn to juggle everything. So that’s what I do." What a woman!

You’ve been voted the sexiest woman in the world, but how do feel about your looks when you wake up in the morning?

When I wake up is probably when I feel my most beautiful, because my husband makes me feel that way. He just loves me, and he probably loves me best in the morning. When he tells me that, it makes me feel all, ‘Ahh, I look so great!’ He loves me when I have my hair and make-up done and he loves me first thing in the morning, just as I am. That’s what everyone should have in their life.

So you’re happy for him to see you slobbing around in comfy clothes?

Oh yeah, I’m all about comfort. Even in the gowns on the red carpet I’m like, if it’s weird to wear and it’s hard to breathe I don’t want to wear it.

You’re walking the Cannes red carpet for L’Oréal Paris, what do you enjoy most about it?

Meeting all their other ambassadors and seeing beauty through the eyes of so many parts of the world. I love how L’Oréal’s roster reflects the diversity of beauty in so many different cultures.

And for all ages too. What’s your own attitude towards ageing?

It’s happening! It’s just inevitable. I just do my best to look my best.

It doesn’t look like it’s happening to you.

That’s very sweet! I think it’s because I’m in love right now. That’s the best thing for your skin, happiness.

Besides being in love, what’s involved in looking like you do?

A lot! It’s a lot of work. People go, ‘Oh you’re naturally thin’. I go, ‘NO. No, no, no.’ For something like Cannes, it’s a strict diet and exercise regime for a month. I’m a runner, I do Pilates, I do yoga and I rotate those, and I do a lot of weights too now.

Is it easy to find the motivation to stay in shape?

If I didn’t do it, I’d put on weight! I hate working out, but I love the way it makes me feel afterwards. Also, exercise is something my husband and I do together. We like to go for hikes and go to yoga. Doing it as a couple just centres us.

Do you stick to a strict diet too?

Before Cannes I’ve been doing a no-carb diet. Not all the time, but when I want to lose weight I do no carbs, no sugar. Step up the exercise. I try to be consistent throughout the year, but I do fall off the wagon sometimes. I’m not a fan of bread, but it’s the pasta that’s hard for me. I LOVE pasta.

The food on your Instagram is a mix of virtue and vice. Do you live your life torn between the two?

Oh yeah! My calories of choice are wine. If you offered me the choice between bread and a glass of wine, I’d be like, ‘WINE!’

Do you still like to go out to drink and party?

No, we’re homebodies. In the evening we like to open a bottle of wine and cook. I cook everything. You name it, I can cook it.

Are you restrained with the wine or do you get sozzled?

I’m pretty sensible… but um yeah, there are many nights when we have friends over and we wake up, like, ‘Ouch! How did that happen? Why is my head pounding?’ We don’t go out partying, we get accidentally drunk. It’s good company, good wine, good conversation, bad headache.

Do you hate having your figure endlessly scrutinised?

Oh yeah. I mean, I’m not like, ‘Oh my GAWD they took a picture of me!’, I don’t really CARE, but it’s just annoying. Like, I ate a plate of cheese and now I’m having a baby.

No, I wasn’t laughing about it. I did LOOK pregnant in some holiday pictures, so I had to go, ‘I’ll give you that one… But it is just cheese.’

So you don’t stick to salad on holiday?

Nooo, I don’t deny myself when I’m away. I just did a food and wine trip to Spain, and it was just gluttony. It was wonderful.

Any chance of Desperate Housewives coming back?

Oh, I would LOVE to. I miss being Gabby Solis. It’s still on telly around the world. But if the chance happens to do it again, I’d be the first one there.

Credits: BBC © Provided by Trinity Mirror Plc Credits: BBC Excellent news. AND we note you say ‘telly’. Do you have an affinity for us Brits?

Oh I do! I shot in Wales for the BBC and I was just in Scotland. I love the UK… Wales was so much fun. We shot in these beautiful castles all over the countryside. On my days off I went to Stonehenge, I saw Jane Austen’s house, I went to Bath. I love British comedy, and I was always a big fan of Jack Whitehall, so Decline And Fall was my dream job.

What qualities are you drawn to?

Humour. Victoria Beckham makes me laugh, she’s so witty and intelligent. The funniest things come out of her mouth! [cackles] That’s why we clicked.

What are you like together?

Silly, very silly. We stay in. We have sleepovers. We’re like home buddies. Two girls yapping about life. She’s funny, we laugh about life, about things that have happened to us. We’re always saying ‘What?? Oh that’s crazy!’

Yes! Actually she’s more a tequila girl though. I can’t do tequila, but she’s good. She could probably drink me under the table. [laughs]

You’ve got the skin of a woman 10 years younger. What are your secrets?

I’m a huge sunblocker. Not only sunblock, but foundations with sunblock. People want to know my make-up regime, but it starts with skincare. You can’t pile make-up on bad skin. I’m a serum, potion, moisturiser, eye cream kind of girl. I also do lots of at-home masks, L’Oréal has these amazing new clay masks [ Pure Clay, £7.99 ], they’re awesome. They’re such fun and they feel like a spa treatment.

© Provided by Trinity Mirror Plc How would your 20-year-old self feel about how your life has turned out?

She’d think it was fun. My 20 year old self always expected success but she didn’t know how. I didn’t know what I was going to do but I always knew the woman I wanted to be. And I think that’s who I am now.

What’s been your biggest life lesson along the way?

It’s probably a Maya Angelou quote. She said, ‘People will forget what you said, people will forget what you did, but people will never forget how they made them feel.’ So that is something I try to live by. I always try to make people feel good.

You split your life between different countries, but where in the world do you feel most at home?

In my husband’s arms. Wherever he is, that’s home. Half the time when we’re travelling I don’t even really know where we’re waking up. I’ll be like ‘where am I?’ But then I’ll see him next to me and I think, ‘You’re here. It doesn’t matter’.

Yes, she Cannes

"I love getting to talk about beauty," she enthuses. "There’s a real evolution going on. I’m into non-toxic products so for L’Oréal to come out with the Botanicals hair range that’s made from all natural ingredients – all organic, no parabens, no silicone, no colorants – is fantastic. It keeps your hair healthy and your colour in."

L’Oréal Paris is the official beauty partner of Cannes Film Festival and in 2017 is celebrating the 20th anniversary of the partnership.
