From the farm to the fashion field

On Monday, it's the turn of Jessie Dorman's cattle to be primped and preened as they prepare to compete in the Canterbury A&P show later in the week.

But on Tuesday it'll be the Rakaia Dairy farmer's spin in the spotlight, as she takes on other well-healed fillies in the Fashions in the Field at the New Zealand Trotting Cup.

"They say that you should do something every day that freaks you out and this Fashions in the Field freaks me out a little," she says. "It does put me outside my comfort zone."

Coming under the scrutiny of some of the country's top fashionistas is a far cry from Ms Dorman's usual job down on the farm, where she's more accustomed to gumboots and a little dirt.

"I'll probably have to have a good wash and a clip," she adds. "But definitely a lot of the effort's around the styling and putting the pieces together, so that's been really interesting for me to see how that works."

Helping her go from gumboots to glamorous is friend and fellow dairy farmer Katie Flett, who's no stranger to the fashion winner's circle, having won best-dressed lady on Cup Day last year.

She's more than happy to take a back seat this year and help her friend.

"Personally, I think I've won it," Ms Flett says. "Now I've ticked that off on my list of things I want to win, so I get more joy from going along and being amongst it, and helping ladies feel great about themselves... build up their confidence."

And judging by the little red number they've pulled together in just a couple of weeks for Jessie's fashion debut, there should be no shortage of confidence and feeling great, when she finally hits the fashion stage.
