It may come as a shock to the immaculate among us, but in research by Lightbulbs Direct, some surfaces that we regularly come into contact with never get cleaned, despite being hotspots for germs. See the full top five below.

Top 5 areas we never clean

  1. Walls (15%)
  2. Doorknobs (10%)
  3. Tops of cupboards (9%)
  4. Computer keyboards (8%)
  5. Lampshades (8%)

Research by Which? found that some keyboards can be five times as dirty as a toilet seat! This seems pretty gross when you take into account that 2% of Brits only clean their computer keys twice a year or less and 8% have never cleaned them at all.

The study also found that 10% of people admitted that they only cleaned kitchen worktops and dining tables less than once a month. And even more shocking, three per cent of Brits confessed to only washing these areas once a year, despite preparing food and eating on them every day.

Over 35s came out on top for keeping their homes sparkling. Worryingly though, 10% of 18-34-year-olds only clean their toilet twice a year. And men were found to be muckier than women.

David Tetlow, e-commerce manager at Lightbulbs Direct, said: "It is quite shocking to see how often we forget to clean some of the places we come into contact with the most in and around the home. Light switches could be hosting a number of different types of bacteria, so it's quite surprising that one in four of us cleans them every six months or less!

"Obviously, some places around the home are easier to clean than others, and many spots we simply forget about. However, keeping on top of these chores is vital to keep your home looking fresh and sparkling."
