They want to dress to impress, but at the same time, don't want to steal the spotlight from the happy couple.

However one fashion designer has done away with the idea of mothers dressing demurely for weddings and has instead created a gown that will have the priest's jaw dropping straight down to the floor.

Bulgarian designer Tonena is selling a selection of bridal dresses and formal wear on her Etsy store.

Among the gorgeous white wedding dresses are a few garments, which claim to be for the mother of the bride or groom - and some of these have raised eyebrows on Twitter .

A user named Rave Sashayed, spotted the dresses online and shared photos of them on social media, which quickly went viral.

She captioned her post: "The pure awe I experienced when I saw this was labeled a 'mother of the bride' dress."

The photos show a model wearing a very sexy black dress, which some people have compared to lingerie.

The mermaid-style gown features several sheer panels, a plunging neckline and black feathers around the hem.

Tonena describe the dress, which costs £1,893.97 as being a "black mother of the bride dress".

They add: "Open back evening gown with long sleeves, sexy formal dress with feathers, sexy black dress."

Twitter users thought the target audience for the gown was hilarious, and it inspired many people to dream about ruining a wedding.

One person wrote: "If one of you wants to buy me this dress I will wear it to your wedding and play the villainous and possibly magical mother you want your fiancé to fear and avoid from then on."

Another said: "The year is 2060. I'm 65 years old, but my skincare routine and medical technology has rendered me an elegant, ageless beauty.

"A perpetual bachelorette, I arrive solo, wearing this, to my only child's wedding.

"The three possible fathers are also present. A scene is caused."

A third commented: "Whoever invites me to their wedding next, I 100% promise to (a) wear this dress; (b) show up during the ceremony LATE and LOUD; (c) cause an elegant but terrible scene during the reception; and (d) throw a full glass of red wine on the relative of your choosing during said scene."

They added: "The great thing about this dress is, you can wear it again to literally any christening to which you weren't invited."

Someone else joked it was the dress they would wear to their billionaire husband's funeral in the future.
