Nestle is making a big change to Milkybar chocolate

Nestle is making a big change to its Milkybar chocolate.

In the company's latest bid to reduce the amount of sugar in its products, Milkybar chocolate will now have 7.6g of sugar per serving, down from 8.3g in the original bars.

Nestle said the nine per cent reduction will be balanced with an increased amount of milk. The new recipe puts milk as the first ingredient, and will now make up 37.5 per cent of the chocolate, up from 26 per cent.

Nestle added that the new product will remain free from artificial flavours, colours, preservatives and sweeteners.

The packs are getting a redesign too. "Milk is now our No 1 ingredient" will appear across the full Milkybar range, so bars, buttons, and sharing bags will be emblazoned with the quip. 

According to Nestle, the reformulation will remove almost 350 tonnes of sugar and 130 million calories from UK public consumption. The move is part of the business' pledge to remove ten per cent of sugar from across its confectionery portfolio by 2018.

Milkybar is one of Nestle's most popular products, and follows a tweak to the KitKat recipe, which now contains 20 per cent more milk and 13 per cent more cocoa.

Nestle isn't acting alone. Many other food and drinks businesses are working to reduce sugar levels as part of a wider government obesity initiative.

Fiona Kendrick, chairwoman and chief executive of Nestle UK and Ireland, said: "We want to make our products the best they can be for our consumers. We'll take every opportunity to innovate and reformulate to improve our products but this can never be to the detriment of taste.

"We have used our strength in research and innovation to develop a great recipe that replaces some sugar with more of the existing, natural ingredient that people know and love. We have added more milk to the recipe, which has been at the heart of Milkybar ever since it was launched in 1936."
