Did you have a roast today? If not, you may well be hangry. It's a common affliction.

When hungry, your mood sours. It's not actually your fault, though. There's a physiological reason for your anguish. It's not just because you just saw a sign to Nando's but are stuck in a mile-long traffic jam.

When we're hungry, irritability arrives because of your blood glucose. It's a bit like when diabetics suffer a drop and become moody and confused.

Our bodies process the foods we eat into amino acids, fats, and simple sugars – glucose being one of them. When these run out, alarm bells ring.

Our brain depends on simple sugars such as glucose to function properly. If it drops significantly, you won't be able to perform basic tasks as well – in extreme scenarios, you might even feel dizzy or anxious, or jumble words. And we get upset.

It's why, for example, you might feel shaky after a long run – your body's used up a lot of energy, and it needs replacing. And we know we need to sort that out.

Regulating blood glucose varies from person to person. After an intense workout at the gym, some people might feel relaxed, but others might get a bit angry.

So yes, some people get more hangry than others – the sensation is amplified. Their body might not process sugar so quickly, or be as proficient as maintaining reserves in downward slumps. But the capacity to get flustered when hungry is there in all of us.

The correlation between low blood sugar and anger is so strong, Mental Floss says, that a 1984 study was able to predict violence from people who had problems regulating their blood glucose.

Another side to hangry feelings is the way your body tries to counteract low glucose in blood. Your brain sends messages to certain organs to try to raise your levels. This triggers adrenaline, which affects your mood.

Obviously, we all know what to do when we're feeling hangry. Tuck into a hearty plate of food. Nutrient-rich foods that keep you sated for longer, such as nuts, yoghurt, eggs, and hummus are all good ideas.
