Insurance pilot to help after quake

North Canterbury residents struggling with earthquake insurance claims will be able to seek advice from a new service as part of a new pilot programme.

Community Law staff will be set up around Hurunui, Kaikoura and Marlborough to assist with specific insurance claims stemming from November's 7.8 magnitude earthquake.

Civil Defence Minister Gerry Brownlee said insurance issues were stressful so authorities were working to get the programme into place quickly.

It will incorporate lessons learned from the Residential Advisory Service after the Christchurch 2010 and 2011 quakes, he said.

"In North Canterbury, the situation is different and we are still right at the start of the process, hence the decision to begin with a pilot programme with legal support which can be adapted as we go forward," Mr Brownlee said.

The government will fund the service but advice will be provided by Community Law.
