ANZ Bank staff are set to stop work and go on marches across the country in protest at the company's contract offer.

Unionised employees will stop work today to attend rallies in Auckland, Hamilton, Palmerston North, Wellington, Christchurch, Oamaru and Dunedin.

Workers in other towns will also walk off the job after 96 per cent of union members rejected the bank's latest offer.

Employees voted to go on strike in protest against roster changes they say will destroy family life.

First Union said employees do not support a proposal from ANZ for what the company calls more flexibility among the workforce.

The union says that would leave some staff not knowing when their rostered days off will fall, or regular start and finish times they could rely on.

First Union retail and finance secretary Maxine Gay says while banks like to position themselves as being part of the community through volunteer and sponsorship programmes, it was not doing so in practice.

"ANZ is actively promoting a proposal which would leave bank workers with jobs that they cannot plan their lives around," she said.
