Cali-Ford-ication: California Special returns for 2019 Mustang GT

Introduced in 1964, the Ford Mustang has become one of the easily most recognizable sports cars in America.

Since its inception, the iconic pony car has welcomed a slew of variants such as the Shelby, Bullitt and the California Special, which was first unveiled as the 1967 Shelby GT notchback coupe prototype.

Available exclusively for the drop-top convertible model, the 2019 Mustang GT CS gets unique exterior styling cues such as the trademark fading stripe that traces from the 5.0 side badge to the back of the door, blacked-out open grille and Mustang Performance Pack 1 splitter, and exclusive five-spoke painted machined wheels.

Stepping inside, the GT/CS is outfitted with rich black suede-trimmed seats, featuring embossed GT/CS insignias on the headrests, contrast red stitching and custom embroidered floor mats. Paying homage to the original special, Signature California Special script badging resides on the passenger side of the dash panel.

As far as engine performance is concerned, the CS gets the 5.0-liter V8 – packing up to 460 horsepower and 420 lb.-ft. of torque and topping out at 155 mph – paired to a 6-speed manual transmission. Thanks to an available Performance Package, the 'Stang gets a more advanced rev-matching system for smoother shifts.

The California Special also gets a custom-tuned B&O Play 12-speaker premium sound system, as well as two new vintage-inspired colors: Velocity Blue and Need for Green.

Ford says the 2019 Mustang GT/CS models will be ready to fly down the Pacific Coast Highway this summer.
