New Mitsubishi SUV to rival Qashqai

Mitsubishi is broadening its range of SUVs with a new model, and we expect it’ll be called the Mitsubishi Eclipse.

Names aside, the new Mitsubishi will compete with other mid-size SUVs like the Nissan Qashqai, SEAT Ateca and Honda CR-V.

We’ve known Mitsubishi has had a new SUV in the pipeline for some time: the XR-PHEV concept below was first unveiled back in 2013 at the Tokyo Motor Show, refined for the Geneva show in 2014 and evolved again in 2015. The (presumed) Eclipse will be officially unveiled at this year’s Geneva Motor Show in March.

As is almost always the case, the new Mitsubishi SUV is more aesthetically conservative than its preceding concepts. When viewed from the side, however, the XR-PHEV’s design ethos has clearly transitioned reasonably intact from drawing board to production line. Mitsubishi is keen to highlight its new SUV is “coupe-like” with “highly chamfered contours” and a “distinctive V-line in the rear quarter.”

And it’s at the rear where the most intrigue lies: the XR-PHEV concept had a daringly creased back end, raked 20 degrees backwards from a right angle. Inspecting the first official image of the new Mitsubishi SUV reveals the angle of the rear lights has increased to 80 degrees, but it remains significantly off the vertical plane.

We’ll have to see if the gloss-black bumper area and twin-window rear design of the XR-PHEV concept make it into the new Mitsubishi SUV, though. There’s no word on engines yet, either, but expect the usual petrol or diesel choices, as well two and four-wheel drive options.

New Mitsubishi SUV price and on-sale date

Given the smaller ASX is available from around £15,500 and the cheapest Outlander is £25,000, give or take, it’s likely the new Mitsubishi SUV will start at roughly £20,000.
