Hurricane Katrina made landfall in the U.S. and caused severe flooding between the cities of Gulfport, Mississippi, and New Orleans, Louisiana. It became the costliest hurricane in U.S. history, causing damages worth over $100 billion.

In the U.K. (pictured), four suicide bombers attacked central London. The terrorist bombing claimed 52 lives in three blasts on Tube trains in the Underground and one on a double-decker bus.
