NZ NewswireNZ Newswire 25/12/2014

A 25-year-old Chinese man has died after being swept out to sea while crab fishing at a beach near Whangarei.

The man had been with a group on Uretiti Beach when he and a friend were caught in "reasonably sized surf" and were pulled out to sea at about 6pm on Christmas Day, Senior Sergeant Steve Dixon told NZ Newswire.

The friend managed to get back to the beach, but the 25-year-old man drowned and was found washed up on the beach soon after.

The man had been either laying or retrieving pots used to catch crabs when he got into difficulty, Snr Sgt Dixon said.

The man was a Chinese national who had been living in Auckland.

Police are trying to contact his family in China and won't be releasing his name until they are informed.

A helicopter and ambulance came to the beach, ambulance spokesman Robbie Walker told NZ Newswire.
