A driver is lucky to be alive after hitting a tree in south Auckland at high speed.

Emergency services were called to the scene on Te Irirangi Dr in Flat Bush just before 1am on Sunday

"A car had collided with a house and tree, the vehicle was reported to be on its roof and one person was trapped," police told NZME.

A witness told Newshub the driver was "easily" going at least 80km/h, perhaps 90km/h, and had just run a red light.

"It looks like he lost control. He's hit a car and he's tipped it and now he's stuck in there. It's pretty freaky. I'm surprised he's alive."

The witness, the first on the scene, tried talking to the man until police and ambulance arrived five minutes later.

"I just tried to talk to him and get his attention - it looked like he was knocked out though."

The local man said the accident could have been worse if the driver had missed the tree and hit the house.

"I'm quite happy [he] didn't hit the kids."

The driver's injuries are reportedly non life-threatening.
