Far North road shut for at least fortnight

A major road linking Paihia and Kawakawa in the Bay of Islands will remain closed for at least a fortnight because of an 80-metre-long slip, the NZ Transport Agency says.

The stretch of State Highway 11 has been closed since early Tuesday after the slip came down north of Kawakawa in the Lemons Hill area.

NZTA system manager Steve Mutton says the early assessment from engineers is that it could take at least two weeks' work to make the hillside safe enough to reopen the road to traffic.

"A lot depends on the weather," he said on Wednesday.

"It's fine right now, but there have been days of heavy rain and more is forecast next week. More rain could potentially see the slip start to move again."

A detour via SH10 will add another 10 to 20 minutes to the journey between Paihia and Kawakawa.
