A father will not be allowed to watch his daughter play in an Islamic netball tournament in Auckland because men have been banned from attending the games.

Organisers say the players will not wear hijab and would feel uncomfortable if men were watching them.

The Islamic Women's Council of New Zealand has organised the event, which is being held at the Zayed College for Girls in Mangere.

Spokesperson Anjum Rahman said the tournament was a private, invitation-only event.

She said she was sympathetic to the father, but many young women would not play in the tournament if they knew men were watching them.

Ms Rahman said the father was the first to have complained about the ban on men watching the games.
