Green Party co-leader James Shaw tweeted a video revealing the injury he sustained in an attack on Thursday.

Appearing with a black eye, Shaw thanked everyone from around New Zealand and "all around the world" for the messages of support he received after being attacked while walking to work on Thursday.

"In particular, I want to thank people who actually helped me out directly yesterday," he said.

"There was a couple that intervened on the scene, and I really want to thank them for their intervention."

He thanked Wellington police, ambulance and hospital staff, before saying he was back at work.

On Thursday, Shaw texted Newshub saying it looked worse than it was.

Police arrested a 47-year-old on Thursday for the attack and he will appear in court on Friday.

After the attack, Green Party co-leader Marama Davidson said Shaw was "shaken", but there was nothing to suggest the attack had anything to do with his work or the Green Party's work.

But Shaw told ministerial colleagues the attacker yelled about the United Nations. New Zealand supported a controversial United Nations migration pact which was vociferously attacked.
