While most Kiwis are enjoying the festive season, a fellow countryman is back in a Myanmar court after using an image of Buddha wearing headphones to promote cheap drinks.

VGastro bar general manager Philip Blackwood's trial began earlier this month in Yangon, and is set to resume on Friday.

The 32-year-old New Zealander is charged under the nation's strict religious laws for insulting religion after sparking outrage with the publicity stunt.

Two other bar staff who are both Myanmar nationals are also on trial.

Authorities shut down the bar - which had only recently opened - in early December.
