A Wellington man has suffered serious injuries after being caught up in the hydraulics of a rubbish truck.

The accident happened in Thorndon's Upton Tce about 10.30am on Tuesday.

The man became trapped in the hydraulic arms on the side of the truck that pick up wheelie bins, rather than the crushing hydraulics normally found at the rear of trucks, Fire Service central communications shift manager Chris Dalton says.

"Hydraulics are hydraulics. They don't really take any prisoners," he told NZ Newswire.

The man, reported to be 20-years-old, was taken to Wellington Hospital in a critical condition.
