A six-year-old boy whose body was recovered from the water in Marlborough has been described as "one in a million" by his grieving family.

He was identified by Nekko Paul Haworth of Richmond, Nelson, by police on Thursday.

Nekko's body was found by the Police Dive Squad in Havelock on Tuesday afternoon, after he had been reported missing early that morning.

Friends of Nekko's family, who have launched a Givealittle page in his memory, say he had "the brightest future ahead of him".

"His life was taken too soon by a tragic accident," the page says.

"Nekko had a beautiful smile and a personality that was one in a million."

Almost $3000 had been donated by nearly 100 donors, as of 3pm Thursday.

The Givealittle page was made to "give Nekko the send off he deserves", the creators said, describing the boy as "cheeky, bubbly and full of energy".

"Rest in peace and love, you will be the brightest star in the sky."

Police said it's still being investigated how Nekko ended up in the water.

His death has been referred to the coroner.
