A photo of an Australian soldier drinking beer out of a dead Taliban fighter's prosthetic leg has emerged.

The image, exclusively obtained by Guardian Australia, shows a senior shoulder sculling beer at an unauthorised bar in 2009.

The bar, known as the Fat Lady's Arms, was set up in Australia's special forces base during a SASR 2 squadron assault in Uruzgan.

Another photo appears to show two soldiers performing a dance with the leg.

A former trooper told The Guardian the leg, allegedly taken from the battlefield, travelled with the squadron at all times.

"Wherever the Fat Lady's Arms was set up, then that's where the leg was kept and used occasionally for drinking out of."

The photo came after Prime Minister Scott Morrison condemned a fake image posted by China's foreign ministry spokesperson of an Australian soldier holding a knife to the throat of an Afghan child.

Morrison on Monday said the Chinese government should be "utterly ashamed" for posting the photoshopped image, and demanded an apology.

The post came after a report that alleged Australian special forces unlawfully killed 39 Afghans in 2016.

The relationship between China and Australia has deteriorated over the last year since Canberra called for an international inquiry into the origins of the COVID-19 pandemic.
