NZ Newswire logoNZ Newswire 6 days ago

Police have exchanged shots with an armed offender in the Waikato town of Morrinsville.

No one was wounded in the gunfire, which happened on Kuranui Road, to the south of the town, around midnight on Saturday night.

Police had attempted to stop a speeding vehicle on Thames Street, says Waikato district commander, Superintendent Bruce Bird.

The vehicle was stopped on Kuranui Road.

"One of the occupants got out and shot at police. A second police unit arrived and fired shots in return," Supt Bird said.

The three officers then took cover in nearby farmland before the armed offenders squad arrived.

Police are currently speaking to a person and cordons are in place while police continue their manhunt for the offenders.
