One dead after crash in Bay of Plenty

© Claire Eastham-Farrelly/RNZ One person died following a crash between a car and a van which closed a section of State Highway 2 last night.

Three other people were injured in the crash near Whakamarama in the Western Bay of Plenty.

The serious crash unit is investigating.

A section of State Highway 2 was closed between Waihi and Tauranga, with diversions in place.

This morning, a motorcyclist died in a crash at Pukekawa in the Waikato.

Police and emergency services are at the scene of the crash on Highway 22.

Meanwhile, six people were taken to hospital after a two-car crash near Palmerston North last night.

The police were called to the scene near the corner of Ashurst Road and Harrisons Line just after 8.30pm.

One of the cars was on fire but that was quickly extinguished by Fire and Emergency.

The police said three people suffered moderate injuries.
