Severe thunderstorms could bring hail and flash flooding to the northern North Island tonight.

The agency has issued a severe thunderstorm watch for Northland, Auckland, Waikato and Waitomo, saying an active front was due to pass over this evening.

There was a high risk of thunderstorms in all of those regions, and a moderate risk they would be severe, especially near the west coast.

Hail up to 15mm in diameter was possible and up to 30mm of rain could fall per hour, MetService said.

"Rainfall of this intensity can cause surface flooding or possibly flash flooding and make driving hazardous."

The agency also forecast wind gusts of up to 100km/h - enough to damage trees, powerlines and unsecured structures.

There was a lower thunderstorm risk for the rest of the North Island.
