Around 13,000 salmon have died in a South Island fish farm after burglars allegedly shut of the water supply to their tank.

Haast police said the burglary occurred at the Paringa Salmon Farm Cafe in South Westland on Saturday night.

The alleged offenders tampered with the farm's equipment, shutting off the water supply and causing the small salmon to suffocate.

"This has caused thousands of dollars of loss for the business and police would like to hear from anyone who has seen anything suspicious in the South Westland area," Haast police Senior Constable Paul Gurney said.

A vehicle parked several kilometres up the state highway was also tampered with.
