An Auckland man two weeks away from his 21st birthday remains in Auckland Hospital in a critical condition after being hit by a car.

The man was hit by the car on Springs Road in Parakai at 9.55pm on Thursday, police say.

He remains in hospital in a critical condition on Sunday after undergoing surgery.

The driver, a 19-year-old man, handed himself in at Helensville Police Station on Friday and has been interviewed.

The investigation is ongoing, and a decision regarding charges will be made upon its conclusion.

A Givealittle page has been set up to help the victim, Alec Gannaway, who is the son of Auckland artist Joy Bell.

Mr Gannaway was walking home when the car hit him, the page says.
