A magnitude 4.6 earthquake has given the centre of the country a jolt.

The strong tremor hit five kilometres south-west of Seddon, in Marlborough, at about 12.45pm on Monday.

Residents across Wellington and the top of the South Island reported feeling the shaking, with some as far as Palmerston North getting a light rattle.

The quake struck at a depth of 10 kilometres, according to Geonet.
