Housing Minister Nick Smith says at least 30 per cent of the homes, or about 180, will be priced below $450,000.

"This housing development is part of the government's housing accord with the Christchurch City Council - the combination of this project and those already under way will deliver more than 1000 new houses in Christchurch," he said.

Legislation had to be passed to revoke the reserve status of Riccarton Racecourse land.

The bill was passed on Thursday night.
