7.6 quake strikes near Vanuatu

NZ Newswire logoNZ Newswire 12/08/2016

Civil Defence says there's no threat of a tsunami hitting New Zealand following a 7.6-magnitude earthquake south-east of Vanuatu.

The Pacific Tsunami Warning Centre issued tsunami warnings for New Caledonia, Vanuatu and Fiji following the 10-kilometre deep tremor centred near the Loyalty Islands - but has since said that threat has passed.

Civil Defence confirmed there was no danger to New Zealand.

The quake, at about 1.30pm on Friday, also prompted a false report of a 4.0 earthquake east of Auckland.
