Abortion figures remain steady

NZ NewswireNZ Newswire 17/06/2016

The number of abortions performed in New Zealand each year remains steady, just-released figures show.

A total of 13,155 abortions were performed in 2015, which is comparable with 2014's 13,137 figure.

Statistics NZ says the general abortion rate has dropped slightly, from 14.4 per 1000 women in 2014 to 14.2 in 2015 - the lowest rate in over 20 years.

There's been a noticeable drop in the abortion rates for younger women in recent years.

The abortion rate for women aged 20-24 years fell from a peak of 41 per 1000 in 2003 to 23 per 1000 in 2015.

The abortion rate for women aged 15-19 years dropped from 26 per 1000 to 11 per 1000 over the same period.

Nearly two-thirds of abortions performed in 2015 were the woman's first. More than half of all abortions were performed within the first 10 weeks of pregnancy.

The highest number of abortions recorded in New Zealand was 18,511 in 2003.
