Absent Misbah suspended for slow over rate

Cricket bosses have suspended Pakistan captain Misbah-ul-Haq from the second Test against New Zealand - a match he was going to miss anyway.

The ICC announced the ban and a fine of 40 per cent of his match fee for the veteran skipper after Pakistan failed to maintain a sufficient over rate in the first Test. New Zealand won by eight wickets in Christchurch.

Misbah isn't playing in the second Test starting in Hamilton on Friday as the 42-year-old returned home on Sunday to attend a family bereavement.

Azhar Ali will lead the tourists in Hamilton.

Pakistan's players were all fined 20 per cent of their match fee after match officials found they had fallen two overs short of their target after time allowances were taken into account.

Misbah was also found guilty of a minor over-rate offence during the fourth Test against England at The Oval in August.
