AC Milan could soon lose third place in the Italian Serie A after a 0-0 draw at home to Atalanta.

AC Milan drew 0-0 at home to Atalanta in a Lombardy derby on Saturday and could soon lose third place in the Italian Serie A.

The Rossoneri reached 33 points from 17 games and still fill the last Champions League berth but Napoli and Lazio are both on 31 points with a better goal difference before Sunday games at home to Torino and Fiorentina, respectively. Atalanta are now sixth on 29.

Leaders Juventus (39) and second-placed Roma (35) face off in a table-topping clash later on Saturday.

Atalanta displayed all their dynamism at the Giuseppe Meazza and came close after Andrea Petagna left two defenders standing.

Roberto Gagliardini threatened again for the Bergamo guests with a header on 45 minutes while Milan's Luca Antonelli struck the post at the other end.

Giacomo Bonaventura led the Devils' brisk start to the second half missing narrowly on 53 and 56 minutes as Atalanta were on the ropes. But they also threatened on their counter-attacks and saw Rafael Toloi's header saved seven minutes from time.

Carlos Bacca came for an indifferent Gianluca Lapadula and had his single chance blocked in the box on 84 minutes.

Earlier in Empoli the hosts beat Cagliari 2-0 from a Levan Mchedlidze brace to move five points clear of the drop zone.

The Georgia forward scored his first goals of the season in the eighth and 72nd minutes. Four minutes later home goalkeeper Lukasz Skorupski saved a penalty from Cagliari substitute Joao Pedro.

The Tuscany side remained just above the bottom three in 17th place while Cagliari sit 14th on 20 points.
