A New Zealander accused of stealing motorbikes from a Melbourne warehouse says someone who looked like dead US rapper Biggie Smalls planted evidence on him.

Alex Jones, 26, appeared before the Sunshine Magistrates Court on Tuesday charged over a burglary at Allied Seafreights in Laverton North on July 10.

Jones told police a screwdriver and motorcycle key found in his pockets outside the warehouse had been "planted" on him by an African American man who "looked like Biggie Smalls", the court heard.
