Adams apologises for 'monkeys' comment

NZN 17/05/2016

New Zealand basketballer Steven Adams has apologised for a derogatory comment made in the wake of Oklahoma City's upset victory over the defending champion Golden State Warriors.

Adams, following game one of the NBA Western Conference finals, described the opposition guards as "quick little monkeys" in a televised interview.

However, he quickly apologised when he realised many in the US were taking offence.

"It was just a poor choice of words, mate," Adams told USA Today Sports.

"I was just trying to express how difficult it was chasing those guys around."

He blamed the blunder on being in a new country. He has been in the US since 2012.

"I'm assimilating, mate, still trying to figure out the boundaries. But I definitely overstepped them tonight."

Adams was a key figure in Oklahoma's come-from-behind 108-102 win with 16 points and 12 rebounds.

Game two of the best-of-seven Western Conference finals series will also be played in Oakland on Thursday (NZT).

The series winners play either the Toronto Raptors or the Cleveland Cavaliers, whose Eastern Conference finals begin on Wednesday.
