Adams in pre-Games shot put action

NZ NewswireNZ Newswire 14/07/2016

Double Olympic shot put champion Valerie Adams and pole vaulter Eliza McCartney will get a gauge on their Olympic preparations when they compete in the Diamond League event in Monaco this weekend.

Adams, 31, will be in a field that includes German Christina Schwanitz, and Americans Tia Brooks and Michelle Carter.

After returning to competition earlier this year following several months out with injury, Adams has a season's best throw of 19.69 metres.

Both Schwanitz (20.17m) and Brooks (19.73m) have bettered that mark, while Carter has achieved 19.59m.

While Carter will be going to Rio, the highly-rated Brooks missed out on the US team after finishing a disappointing fourth at the national trials.

China's Gong Lijiao, who has the year's best throw of 20.43m, isn't in the start list for the event on Saturday morning (NZT).

McCartney will also be up against some strong competition.

The 19-year-old set a national record by clearing 4.80m in Dunedin in March, a mark that ranks her fifth for season-best performances among the eight starters in the field.
