A career-high 20 points from New Zealand centre Steven Adams wasn't enough to prevent his Oklahoma City Thunder sinking to a sixth loss in eight NBA games.

The Thunder went down 111-109 away to the Los Angeles Lakers, ending a nine-game winning run against their opponents.

Adams, 23, has never scored more points for Oklahoma City in 231 games, landing nine of 13 shots to go with six rebounds.

He looked to have carried his team home with an offensive rebound and basket with 13 seconds remaining to put his team ahead.

However, Nick Young shot a three-pointer for the Lakers to hand the Thunder their seventh loss from 15 games. They are sixth in the Western Conference.

Adams' scoring output has been down in recent games, igniting criticism from some commentators and prompting a defence of the Kiwi from his coach Billy Donovan.
