Agencies team up to pinpoint border risks

Data analysts from three government agencies have teamed up to pinpoint risks at New Zealand's border.

Customs says the development will allow its officers to catch more methamphetamine smugglers and the Ministry for Primary Industries to keep biosecurity pests offshore.

Customs intelligence investigations and enforcement group manager Jamie Bamford says a joint team allows the agencies to share the cost of specialist resources.

It also allows them to maximise their intelligence capability and tools.

The data analysts come from Customs, MPI and the Ministry of Business, Innovation and Employment.

Mr Bamford says they will work together to gain new insights into border risk through the use of analytics software and data sharing.

He says millions of border transactions are analysed to identify patterns in data that represent border risk.

"This information makes risk assessment of goods and travellers more accurate."
