Investigators are set to arrive at the scene of a light plane crash at a lower South Island farm that killed two people.

The microlight crashed near Kaka Point, south of Balclutha, on Sunday morning, killing the man and woman onboard.

There were no witnesses and the wreckage was found by the son of the owner of the farm, the Civil Aviation Authority says.

Three CAA investigators are expected to arrive at the scene, near the rural Owaka Highway, on Monday.

A police photographic unit is also due at the site.

The Rans S-6 microlight had taken off from Balclutha aerodrome in good weather conditions on Sunday morning, according to the CAA.

Police say the names of the victims will not be released until their next of kin have been notified.
